The distant War - 17 perspectives on Afghanistan

In January 2002, the first Danish soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan. Despite being constantly updated on global events as they are taking place, to many people the war in Afghanistan still seems distant and intangible.
To posterity and future historians, Denmark’s engagement in Afghanistan will represent a single and complete storyline. By then there will be both scope for rationalization and detached analysis, and a collective national memory of the war in Afghanistan will form.
Thus, the fact that the war in Afghanistan is not yet over represents the core challenge of the task that The National Museum of Military History has taken on in publishing the anthology The Distant War and not least the special exhibition about Afghanistan at The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum (2011-2013).
The anthology represents a collection of perspectives, each trying to explain aspects of Afghan reality in 2011. The anthology is divided into four main themes: Traces of War (Afghanistan’s brutal past), Conflict and Cooperation (Coalition and insurgencies), Boots on the Ground (Danish soldiers in Afghanistan), and The People and the Future (Afghanistan heading for 2014).

The anthology is the result of the contributions of 19 authors, including the following:
• John Mackinlay, Professor, King's College, London
• Mark Sedwill, NATO Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan
• Asta Olesen, PhD, Senior Adviser, the World Bank
• David Loyn, International Development Correspondent, BBC
• Kjeld Hald Galster, PhD, Royal Danish Defence College
• Ole Steen Brams and Michael Pedersen, Danish Foreign Ministry stabilisation advisers
• Thomas Theis Nielsen, PhD, Roskilde University
• Michael H. Clemmensen, Brigadier General
• Lennie Fredskov, Lieutenant Colonel ISAF Team 10
• Heinz Jacobsen, Kabul City Police and Justice Programme
• Etc.

(The anthology has also been published in Danish, ISBN: 978-87-89022-45-1.)
